Poppy! Poppy!

Poppy Poppy
Poppy poppy what do you say?
Wear me on Remembrance Day.

Poppy poppy what do you tell?
Many soldiers in battle fell.

Poppy poppy what should we know?
That peace on earth should
grow, grow, grow.

A simple and anonymous poem, but a poignant message nevertheless. In my opinion teaching our children about Remembrance Day is not an option but a necessity. As adults we see the horrific things that happen in our world and we try to protect our children from finding out too much too soon. I don’t disagree with this in theory, and I might add it is a theory I have adopted with my own children, but in school even our youngest pupils will want to buy a poppy and surely they should be told why we wear them. I am not advocating an approach whereby we divulge details of war and show graphic video footage, but I am suggesting that we find an age appropriate way of explaining Remembrance Day. Maybe our children will be the great peacemakers of the future!
